Public Safety Officer – Belmopan and Belize City Campuses

About the role

The University of Belize invites applications for the position of Public Safety Officer in its Public Safety Department, with openings at the Belmopan Central Campus and the Belize City Campus. The Public Safety Officer helps protect the university’s assets, faculty, staff and students. The work involves physical risks that require basic safety precautions, moderate physical activity, and standing or walking for extended periods.

Responsibilities

  • Patrol and conduct regular security checks at all UB facilities on the campus
  • Secure premises, assets, personnel and access points
  • Monitor cameras and alarms
  • Control visitor, student and employee building access
  • Identify, report and respond to potential security risks
  • Staff campus entrances or stationary posts
  • Monitor, investigate and report suspicious behaviour, incidents and security breaches
  • Safely operate, handle and secure any weapon assigned
  • Intervene in and resolve conflicts among employees and students, and report appropriately
  • Respond promptly to emergencies and incidents according to policy
  • Detain perpetrators until police arrive when a crime is committed, and communicate with fire and emergency medical services
  • Maintain an activity log and prepare surveillance and incident reports
  • Assist the Chief of Security with emergency procedures
  • May be assigned to other UB campuses from time to time, including during hurricanes or other natural disasters

Requirements

  • Minimum of a high school diploma
  • Minimum of 2–3 years’ experience as a security officer
  • Working knowledge of public safety and security operations and procedures
  • Training in first aid, weapon handling and self-defence
  • Ability to conduct security patrols without direct supervision
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to react calmly and respond effectively in emergencies
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information
  • Strong surveillance, observation and judgement skills
  • Knowledge of Belize’s laws and regulations
  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check

Preferred qualifications

  • Bilingual in Spanish and English
